Our Healthy Communities 2030! Initiative outlined a decade-long Strategic Plan, which highlighted focus areas for improved community health, wellness, and quality of life. One of these focus areas are in Youth Health and Wellness! Our affiliate, partner, and long-time friend, Russ Kingsbury, has lead the charge in promoting youth physical activity, gross motor skill development, and character building for decades, and has not let the COVID-19 pandemic slow him down.

Youth Advantage is the overarching organization that facilitates programs like Process Basketball and BeActive Kids. Youth Advantage believes that promoting youth physical activity through sports, free-play, and youth recreation gives kids, teens, and young adults the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop into the adult leaders they want to be in our community!

Process Basketball is geared towards all youth with an interest in basketball; these activities include basic ball handling, conditioning drills, and activities to engage your body and mind! BeActive Kids is all about free play, recreation, and getting moving! BeActive Kids is generally geared towards kids grade K-3, and is set up with fun equipment to give youth the freedom to play in whatever way works for them, regardless of experience or ability.

Buffalo’s Division of Citizen Services has been an integral part of our region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their boots-on-the-ground action steps have provided direct service to individuals/neighborhoods, connected local Block Clubs to a plethora of resources, and facilitated improved Social Capital between community members and local organizations to improve communication, access to resources, and improved quality of life!

We are proud to be partners with the City of Buffalo’s Citizen Services in many ways. In order to achieve improved community health and quality of life, we need to generate more collaborations across public, private, non-profit, and civic sectors to integrate health and wellness into our activities of daily living.

Our Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Ferry Street Walking Initiative is still ongoing! Come share what you wish to see improved in your community to make it more livable – we host regular walking events in local neighborhoods to start dialogues between community members and local organizations, leaders, and stakeholders.

Want to get more active? Want to get outside but not sure what to do or where to go? Afraid to walk alone? Interested in starting a walking club? WE WANT TO HELP! We have trainings, resources, and information on how to get started. Break out your walking shoes and Walk Towards Wellness! Contact us at BeActive@City-Buffalo.org or call (716) 851-4052.
