The Healthy Communities Movement began in America in 1989, and is a global movement to address community health and quality of life. The Healthy Communities Movement is a strategic and comprehensive method to improve community health because it focuses on the social, environmental, economic, and human health dimensions that contribute to a community’s health!

Social/Civic Capital

Social Capital is the networks of relationships and social supports we have based on norms of trust and reciprocity. Positive Social Capital is associated with positive health!

Economic Capital

Our economy influences our health and quality of life through (un)employment, stress, mental health, and access to healthy foods and safety!

Human Capital

Human ‘Capital’ is best measured by human health! This health is multidimensional: it includes physical, mental, social, and emotional health to support healthy and happy communities!

Environmental Capital

Our environment incorporates our air, water, and soil quality, and also focuses on our built environment like sidewalk safety, access to healthy grocery stores and quality schools!

Big Picture Media handles all of our comunications, media marketing, and social media needs!

    BNMC Lungforce Walk Begins!

    All day
    September 1, 2020-October 2, 2020

For the month of September BNMC is participating in the virtual LUNGForce walk being hosted by The American Lung Association. This normally is an in-person event, with various stops along the walk route to learn about lung health and participate in challenges. The ALA is trying a virtual walk this year and we decided this would be a nice opportunity to create a team specific to members of this group. You can sign up anytime throughout the month, but the sooner the better!

How it works: Once you register, you have the entire month to complete the different tasks in the Action Passport (attached). The tasks include signing a petition to support lung health, completing a lung health trivia quiz, going for a walk with a friend, and more. To get credit, you can either post your completed tasks in their LUNG FORCE Facebook Group<https://www.facebook.com/groups/LFWalkBuffalo/> or email Alexis (Alexis.Gigliello@lung.org) directly. For each completed task you are entered to receive a prize.

    Scajaquada September Virtual Auction

    12:00 pm-8:00 pm
    September 1, 2020-September 24, 2020

Buffalo is a once again a vibrant, waterfront city due to the leadership of Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper and the collaboration of many partners in cleaning up the Buffalo River. Building on that model of success, we are now focused on saving another iconic and critical waterway in our beloved City – Scajaquada Creek.

Scajaquada Creek once served as an original source of drinking water, yet today is a major source of contamination, affecting the health of over one million Western New Yorkers.

Scajaquada Creek needs your help to become a healthy, thriving waterway once again! Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper believes that water is the common thread which binds together community, economy, and ecology. Our vision is to reconnect our community to Scajaquada Creek and create healthy habitats in and along its shores.

The Scajaquada September Auction aims to raise funds for the much-needed work ahead to turn this vision into a reality.
